#23-GT Lambert/Pobst/Conte Porsche 911 GT3 R and #52-GT Burgess/Collin/Mathewson
Porsche 911 GT3 R did not take to the track. The #26-GT team stated the
car is ready to race so there was no need to warm-up. The #52 team was
unavailable for comment.
The #51-GT car lost a motor during the
warm-up and are changing to a new one before the start of the race. They
have until 9:40 to get the engine in place and push the car to the grid.
At 9:10 the team reports the engine is in place and they should be ready
to go by race time. At 9:40, just after the formation lap was closed,
the #51-GT appeared on pit lane. The car will start from the pits, and
will be one lap down as a result.
The #66-GT Buckler/Fitzgerald/Nagel

James Foyle completed his first race
Friday as chief steward of the Women's Global GT Series. "It was

served as a Sports Car Club of America club steward for 25 years and an
operating steward with SPORTS CAR the past three years. He has also been
assistant chief steward of the SCCA Runoffs for three years and has been

Noon Quotes:
CHRIS KNEIFEL (#3 Corvette Racing
Corvette C-5R): "The car's running very well, but we're struggling
with the handling."
JACK BALDWIN (#74 Robinson Racing Reynard):
"The worst thing that's happened so far was not the spin but the
gearshift knob broke off in my hand. I have a two-inch nub to shift with
and it's already making blisters on my hand. The spin happened when I
was passing the Lola just past the hairpin. As I passed, I hit some dead
air and spun. There was no damage but I got hung on the curb and had to
wait for the corner workers to pull me off. The car is running okay but
it seems like our tires are going off too fast."
RODNEY McLEOD (#30 White Lightning Racing
Porsche): "This is my first time in a car with a roof on it. I've
been driving in the South American Indy Lights and F3/F3000 in Mexico
and South America. I've tested a lot here at Sebring but this is my
first race here. It was very hectic the first few laps. It was like
everyone was running a sprint race. Once it settled down, I got into a
rhythm and it was a lot of fun. We had a nice long window of over 90
minutes for my stint."
JOHNNY O'CONNELL (#2 Panoz LMP-1
Roadster): "We've got real problems with the throttle and
gearbox.it's half-throttle and not changing gears. Looks like we're
going back."
KELLY COLLINS (#4 Corvette Racing C5-R):
"The racing is good. We're pretty conservative right now. We're not
pushing it too much so we can make the tires last longer. We're going as
fast as we can right now."

transmission that initially caused the problem. When it broke the engine
over-revved and blew."
Tim Robertson (#87) "The car's
running great. But I was giving way to a faster car and went off track.
With the car having a low spoiler and low ground effects its hard to
stay away from snags. The spoiler got snagged by a piece of fiberglass
which messed up the oil cooler. We had to replace it. I'm having a great
time, this is my first time at Sebring."
Gunnar Jeannette (#30) "I am way out
of shape! I've driven some HSR races here and know the track pretty well
- learning cars takes more time than learning the best line on the
track. I love the track. It's very cool - 12 hours is still a long time
even with (driver) changes - a real test of cars and drivers. It's a
real honor to be here at age 17. There are tons of ex-F1 drivers and
it's cool to be on the track with the caliber of drivers here. It's
great to know they are regular guys. On TV they are portrayed as
giants." (about racing here) "I drove a double stint at
Daytona - at night! It was OK. Here I am wiped out after one stint. You
are constantly busy. You have to be smooth to keep up your speed.
Daytona has long straights. Here your longer high speed portions have
bends so you are constantly busy. Apart from the front and back
straights, there's nothing straight on this track."

Alex Job (owner, # 23-GT
Lambert/Pobst/Conte Porsche 911 GT3 R) "We don't know the cause of
our early engine failure and won't know until Porsche Motorsports North
America takes the engine apart. What we do know was Randy Pobst put the
Cranium Porsche in the lead on the first lap, and when Bruno Lambert
took over on lap 33, he continued to put a second a lap on the GT-class
field. Sebring is usually a friend - we've won the 12-hour twice. But
sometimes she can be an enemy. We're going to take the team to our room
at the Panoz hotel, open a bottle of wine, watch the race wind down, and
cheer the winners."

Race traffic is improving as cars drop out".
Bob McLeod (#30) "At Sebring you can
get into a good rhythm as opposed to a short sprint. The bumps in turn
17 make a lap interesting. I've used the track for testing Barber Dodge
cars. In the race, you have to be aware of the prototype traffic.
Otherwise, the car feels great."
Olivier Beretta (#91) "The car is
fantastic. If everything stays as is, we will have a good result."
(compared to Daytona) "Every race is different. One thing I can say
is that there are no more endurance races. They are all sprints now.

Karl Wendlinger (#91) "The car still
feels good." (compared to Daytona) "It's a different objective

Tom Salkowsky, motorsport director, BMW
of North America, Inc. "I give a lot of credit to all the members
of the team. Whether it was a flat tire, CV joint or brakes, they worked
diligently, quickly and really hard and never gave up until the car just
couldn't move anymore. We still have some development work on the 6 car,
but on the bright side of things, it really gave us an opportunity to
run it for over seven hours on a course like Sebring that really beats
up the team and the cars. Many teams take three, six months or a year to
develop a car before they bring it to the race track. This is a car that
we developed very quickly and it's out many, many months before the
production M3. That says a lot about the team. There will be bumps along
the way, no doubt about it, but we learned from the experience and we'll
come back very hard for Charlotte."

12-Hour Sebring Quick Notes: The
last time the 1-2 starting cars finished 1-2 was 1968....The last team
to finish 1-2 was Nissan in 1991 (#83 and #84 Nissan NPT-90)....Tom
Kristensen was a member of last year's winning BMW team. The last driver
to win 2 years in a row for different teams was Eric van de Poele (95,
96). Kristensen joins 16 other drivers having won more than once at
Sebring.
Top three finishers by class:
Prototype - #78, #77, #42; GTS - #91,
#92, #93; GT - #5, #70, #03
Margin of victory: 39.140 seconds
Total laps completed: 360 (ALMS record -
last year 313)
Pit Notes Page 30
Tom Kristensen (#78-P Audi R8) "I
spent last year in the BMW, now this. I'm now trying to establish
myself. It was a toss of a coin to see who was going to qualify, Frank
(Biela) was doing better than me, so he qualified the car."
(comparing BMW to the Audi) "The difference is in the engine. The
Audi has a smaller power plant and the center of gravity is lower, so
it's better on the tires. Today we proved we are quicker." (late in
the race) "I got in the car and it didn't start. Frank was in the
lead when he gave it to me and I had to get to the front
again. I tried to find a rhythm and push it, and watch out for the
slower cars, which were at their limits." (about their brake
problems) "We had to bleed the brakes during the race."
Frank Biela (#78-P Audi R8) (about the
marbles) "The left front louver was broken by the debris, but it
was the same for everybody. Audi deserved the win."
Emanuele Pirro (#78-P Audi R8) "At
Sebring at night there are ghosts. The last few laps I was worried, but
I never gave up. It was a difficult task. I found myself in the lead and
started to worry. The rain was unexpected. Winning the race is a
fantastic feeling, we were never sure until the end, which made the
whole thing sweeter."
Michele Alboreto (#77-P Audi R8) (about
his years of experience a Sebring) "I didn't drive very much, I was
the first one with the brake problems. I didn't drive very quick and I'm
not happy with my performance, but I am happy to be back at
Sebring."
Allan McNish (#77-P Audi R8) (about the 1
headlight) "The one headlight wasn't that much of a problem, the
track isn't that dark. However the slower cars couldn't see me
coming." (about his triple stint) "The triple stint didn't
matter too much, the difficulties were with the brakes. I continually
had to pump the brakes or the pedal would go to the floor."
Rinaldo Capello (#77-P Audi R8) "I
finished third here last year. This car was less bumpy than last year's.
There was only one good line through the course or it became real
bumpy." (the difference between the two Audis at the end) "We
ran out of brakes."
JJ Lehto (#42 BMW V12 LMR) "I was
extremely tired after my triple stint in the dark. At the moment, the
car really takes a lot of effort to drive quickly. I had to pit twice
under yellow, because we realized during the first stop that the brake
disc at the left front needed to be changed. It was a very exciting
race. We were not sorted. All week we had an over steering problem and
couldn't dial it in. We are more than happy with third. Audi was so
strong. We will still be competitive."
Jorg Muller (#42 BMW V12 LMR) "My
first two stints were alright with good and consistent lap times. But in
the second stint I had a problem which I experienced already once at Le
Mans. My right leg fell completely numb because of a trapped nerve, and
I lost about two seconds a lap. All in all I was very careful because I
did not expect a trouble free night. The most important thing was to
bring the car home in one piece."
Bill Auberlen (#43 BMW V12 LMR)
"Audi did a lot of homework in the off season. We've got our work
cut out for us. I wanna get started tomorrow. Their cars were perfect.
It was an unbelievable pace Audi set."
Olivier Beretta (#91-GTS Dodge Viper
GTS-R) "We came trying to win, and we did. The team worked great
together. And the Michelin tires were great. We couldn't ask for
more."
Jean-Philippe Belloc (#93-GTS Dodge Viper
GTS-R) "This is a little like the 24 hours of Le Mans. You can feel
the spirit of the history of the track, with famous winners and big
emotions winning the race."
Dominique Dupuy (#91-GTS Dodge Viper
GTS-R) "The race was more difficult this year, more competitive.
But the team did a fantastic job and the tires were excellent. Everybody
needed to work hard and strong. The team was fantastic. I'm very happy
to be driving the Viper."
Saturday March 18, 2000 Pit Notes Page 31
Karl Wendlinger (#91-GTS Dodge Viper
GTS-R) "The car handled very well. We have been winning a lot. The
team works together - the pit stops were perfect, the tires were
perfect, the team was perfect, they all worked together. I'm very
pleased to win a very big event like Sebring."
Ni Amorim (#93-GTS Dodge Viper GTS-R)
"This was a very good experience. We got on the Podium. In 1997 at
an FIA/GT race at Sebring I was also on the Podium. This race was
important. We had no problems, the car was OK and I'm happy to
win."
Fredy Lienhard (#27-P Doran Special/Judd)
"The race was very good, very hot, and very competitive. We are
happy to be the top privateer team. We put together a good car in a
short time which is a credit to this team. Our engine was not ready for
practice on Monday and Tuesday so we had very little time in the car.
For me personally, it is a big challenge to race here, physically the
most demanding track. I didn't make mistakes. My goal was to get the car
to the finish line and we did that."
Didier Theys (#27-P Doran Special/Judd)
"Well, we had to change brake pads twice, only once for green flag
racing. That's about three minutes each time. We lost one minute with a
wheel nut, otherwise everything was perfect. We have a 6-year old
chassis, but it was only factory teams that beat us. We worked very hard
getting the engine ready. I have to really thank this team."
Andy Pilgrim (#4-GTS Corvette C5-R)
"After the nose of our car delaminated requiring a long change, it
became a question of push. Us pushing to get back into the race. We
managed to get back into the fight, and then the engine dropped a
cylinder. That was bad, but then the gearbox broke. We were fortunate to
finish fifth, we were coming back very strong. We had a much better
handling car than the Vipers. Reliability is what we are missing. They
have seven years of experience and we are still a young team. I remember
that they had 2 ½ years of transmission problems before they got it
right. Now we have to tread the road they have been down."
Kelly Collins (#4-GTS Corvette C5-R)
"For us the bottom line is to work on reliability. When it is hot
like today we can not keep up with them (Vipers), but when it is cool
like this evening we can keep up with them. Without the front end
problem, without our engine and transmission trouble, the starter would
have put us out of contention."
Franz Konrad (#33-GTS Porsche 911 Turbo)
"It was a hard race. We're not so competitive with all the Vipers
and Vettes. I'm glad we finished fourth and got some points. Everyone
did a good job."
Dick Barbour (owner, #5-GT Porsche 911
GT3 R) "Twenty years ago today we had victory circle over all. To
come back with Dirk (Muller) and Lucas (Luhr) is an exciting return. I
am very emotional about. When the checkered flag waived, I had tears in
my eyes. "
Dirk Muller (#5-GT Porsche 911 GT3 R)
"I have really big emotions because I've grown up with Porsche.
I've been driving them since 1997. I'm really happen to win the first
round at Sebring. We drove the twelve hours without any problems. We
were really luck, not lucky, the car was really well prepared. I must
have drunk 10 liters of water today. I don't know how often I was at the
restroom."
Lucas Luhr (#5-GT Porsche 911 GT3 R)
"Talking to Dirk before we came, he told me the track was really
bumpy and really hard to drive. I thought it would be just another race
track, but it was really hard. I'm glad the race is over."
David Murry (#70-GT Porsche 911 GT3 R)
"This whole team came together just over Christmas. Every time we
went out, it got faster, and it really became a good racecar."
Saturday March 18, 2000 Pit Notes Page 32
Hurley Haywood (#03-GT Porsche 911 GT3 R)
(about having Craig Stanton drive the last stint) "He's never
finished a big race. He did a great job and I felt that was a great
reward. I remember the first time Peter Gregg let me finish in
1973." (about the race) "It was a tough race and we set up,
not to be the fastest but to last. I am quite happy with third. We had
no incidents. The guys in the fast cars got along with the guys in the
slower cars so it was a great race. Tony Callas does a great job and
Craig Stanton is a real find! I would drive with him any time. I think
he is one of the finest unknown drivers around."
Craig Stanton (#03-GT Porsche 911 GT3 R)
"This is such an honor to be here on this podium with these great
drivers. We have worked so hard to put this all together. Last year, I
drove with David Murry and Johnny Mowlem and I was a sponge. I soaked up
all of the help they gave me and it has paid off today. This is really
awesome to be on the podium of this great race."
Johnny Mowlem (#70-GT Porsche 911 GT3 R)
"Every time I was on track I had Craig Stanton right behind me. I
had to push really hard. I was basically driving qualifying laps, and
unfortunately the tires couldn't handle it."
David Murry (#70-GT Porsche 911 GT3 R)
"Where we are racing this year, every team is extremely
competitive. We are a brand new team from Australia but I have quite a
few of the same people I have raced with before working with the team.
Dennis Boda is important to our team. And Johnny Mowlem is a terrific
co-driver. Pirelli has been working very hard with us, very hard. I
really appreciate their commitment to us."
Rohan Skea (team owner, #70-GT Porsche
911 GT3 R) "This has been a huge effort to bring a team from
Australia to America. Daytona was a huge test for us and after our race
there, we decided to commit to the entire American Le Mans Series this
year. It's been a tremendous effort by our team and Pirelli to develop a
competitive car. This is the first Australian team to compete here. We
finished 2nd and 6th in class, which is two top ten finishes and 11th
and 17th overall, which is two top 20 finishes outright. John and David
are great mentors. For most of our team, we've been traveling around the
world twice a month. It takes 40 hours to travel here from Australia. To
have success like this is icing on the cake. We've been made to feel
welcome by the American Le Mans Series, Don Panoz and the American
public. We feel like we are part of new family and that is very
important to us."
