Exciting Portland Race to Air Monday Night on Speedvision

INDIANAPOLIS (August 5, 2001) -- What some are calling the most competitive and exciting race in the brief history of the American Le Mans Series will be seen on television Monday night in the United States. Sunday's Grand Prix of Portland at Portland (Ore.) International Raceway will air at 8:30 p.m. (EDT) on the Speedvision Network.

The two-hour, 45-minute sports car endurance race was won by the driving combination of David Brabham and Jan Magnussen, ending Audi's long string of victories in the ALMS. The drivers of the Panoz LMP-1 dueled strongly with both factory Audi cars during the race before eventually coming out on top.

Strong competition was also prevalent in the GTS and GT classes, where Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell won the GTS class in a Chevrolet Corvette C5-R, and Boris Said and Hans Stuck prevailed in the GT class in a BMW M3 GTR.

The Portland race was the only ALMS event this year not scheduled for live television. The series resumes with the Aug. 19 GT3 Grand Prix at Mosport, which will be televised live by NBC Sports.
