ALEX JOB RACING, McKENNA PORSCHE USE FAST DRIVING, PIT STRATEGY TO
INCREASE ALMS POINTS LEAD
Portland, OR - August 5, 2001- Utilizing classic endurance racing
strategy, the Alex Job Racing McKenna Porsche team combined fast driving
with fresh tires to pull out a late race jump into a second place finish
for the # 23 911 GT3 RS, co-driven by Sascha Maassen and Lucas Luhr. This
increases the duos point lead in the American Le Mans Series GT class.
They day didn't end quite as well for the #22 911 GT3 RS, co-driven by
Randy Pobst and Christen Menzel. Menzel got quite a jump at the start as
well, picking up three positions. It was short lived however. According to
Menzel: "The car was balanced pretty good at the start, but as soon
as the track conditions changed, my car got worse, and so did my
times."
"I was able to get a great jump at the start," said Maassen.
"I got by the BMWs, who out qualified us, at the green flag, but as
the race wore on, my tires started to go away. The track conditions today
(warm and sunny) were unlike any of the previous days here."
"We came in and changed all four tires on the #23 at the next to last
pit stop," said team owner Alex Job. "By changing the tires
under a yellow flag so late in the race, we forced BMW into doing the same
a few laps later. This allowed us to move up from fourth to second. Lucas
had the front splitter knocked off on the next to last restart, and that
hurt us, but I don't believe we would have caught the winning BMW. It was
that strong. We still feel V8 BMWs are running as fast as they need to,
but my team made all the right calls today, and it paid off with a second
place finish. I am very proud of them."
"It was a very exciting race today, said McKenna Porsche Vice
President Neil Okun. When the race is this exciting, it's hard not to get
excited about it ourselves. We are proud of the way the team performed,
especially at the end of the race. It was real accomplishment for Alex and
his experienced team."
Now in its 13th year of competition, Alex Job Racing (AJR) is one of the
premier independent Porsche teams in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS).
Based in a brand new 16,000 sq. ft. facility in Tavares, Florida, AJR
entries have tallied three victories in the 12 Hours of Sebring, one win
in the 24 Hours of Daytona, ten ALMS wins and captured the 1999 ALMS GT
Driver and Manufacturer Championships.
