JMB GIESSE FERRARI TEAM ANNOUNCES CREATION OF NEW ALMS TEAM FOR 2003 SEASON
JMB Giesse Ferrari Team is proud to announce the creation of JMB Racing USA, which will compete as of 2003 in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) in North America, and will have an operational base located in Miramar, Florida.

The JMB Giesse Ferrari Team has won three consecutive FIA world sportscar championship titles in 1998, 1999 and 2000 with the legendary Ferrari 333SP, and in 2001 won the FIA GT world championship in the N-GT class with the Ferrari Modena 360 N-GT. Like the JMB Giesse Ferrari Team, JMB Racing USA will remain faithful to Ferrari and race in North America with the 2003 versions of the Ferrari Modena 360 GT.

Claudio Berro, head of Ferrari's GT racing department has indicated: "I am very happy to see a new team that will compete with Ferrari cars in the U.S. as this is the most important market for Ferrari, and our name has always been associated with racing. A team as professional as JMB will certainly bring Ferrari GT cars on the highest steps of the podiums".

The JMB race team was founded in 1995 by Jean-Michel Bouresche and had won two titles in the Porsche Super Cup prior to its association with Ferrari at the beginning of 1998. The spirit of partnership and the close cooperation of the JMB race team with Ferrari has been instrumental in the team's racing achievements. Since the beginning of the team's association with Ferrari, the JMB Giesse Ferrari Team has also greatly benefited from the support of the Giesse Group and its principal, Mr. Marco Lambertini.

The partners of JMB Racing USA are JMB Racing (France) and Ludovico Manfredi. Ludovico Manfredi, CEO, brings to this new U.S. organization fifteen years of business and financial experience in the United States of America, as well as a solid knowledge of the GT racing scene in North America.

In 2003, JMB Racing USA plans to compete in the ALMS, which are based on the rules and regulations established by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO), organizers of the world famous 24 Hours of Le Mans. JMB Racing USA also plans to participate in the 2003 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

MOSES SMITH AWARDED STAR MAZDA SERIES VICTORY AT MAZDA RACEWAY LAGUNA SECA
Sunday, September 22, 2002. Monterey, CA. Moses Smith captured the Star Mazda Series Western Championship and will take the Star Mazda Series North American Championship points battle down to the season finale at Road Atlanta after he was awarded the victory at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca when Justin Pruskowski's car failed a post-race technical inspection.

"We're in the thick of the North American Championship battle right now with Guy Cosmo and those extra four points for first place will definitely help," Smith said afterwards. " It's unfortunate that it happened this way and I feel bad for Justin Pruskowski because he drove a tremendous race. My sponsors, HASA Pool Products, held their shareholder meeting here this weekend and it feels good to give them a victory."

Returning to Star Mazda Series competition after a stint racing Porsche Cup cars in Germany proved to be rewarding for Pierre Ehret, as he scored a career best finish in Star Mazda competition with second place in his Team Bucknum/Flamingo Resort Mazda, while Tim Jennings brought his Jennings Motorsports Mazda home third overall. "I came into this weekend relaxed and every session I was getting better," Ehret said, of his race weekend. "At the start I was just looking to stay in the race and managed to avoid the incidents out there with a bit of racing luck."

Championship points leader Guy Cosmo entered the weekend at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca looking to lock up the championship with a strong run but found himself faced with an uphill struggle when his qualifying time, which would've placed him alongside Smith on the front row of the grid, was disallowed for a technical infraction. "We decided to go with new rubber for the race as we had nothing to lose starting from the back of the field, and when the green flag fell for the race I was still up in turn eight," Cosmo commented. "The Racers Edge Motorsports crew gave me a car that had the legs on anybody, but I was worried that I wasn't going to get a chance to move up with all the caution flags today."

Described by Cosmo as a game of dodge ball, the 24 lap event had three separate full-course caution periods for on track incidents. Contact between Joe Pruskowski and Bret Arsenault in turn two on the opening lap brought out the first caution of the day as the elder Pruskowski's campaign for the Masters Championship points lead were ended early with rear suspension damage.

Trouble reared it's head again on lap five when 2002 Star Mazda Series Western Championship Rookie of the Year Matt Kurdock impacted the tires in turn six. "Coming up into turn six it looked like somebody brake checked Dan Tomlin and he went into the gravel," Kurdock explained, "then I got pushed into the inside wall."

Luis Schiavo would lead the field to the restart on lap ten in his Rotelli Pasta/Racers Edge Motorsports Mazda, ahead of Smith and rookie sensation Michael McDowell, in his MMI Karting/Western Titanium/Mega Metals Star Race Car Mazda. His lead would be short-lived however when contact in the corkscrew with Smith knocked Schiavo out of contention.

With Smith's front wing damaged in the encounter, Justin Pruskowski was able to jump into the lead and open up a gap on the field. McDowell finally worked his way around Smith and was starting to close the distance on Pruskowski when the final caution flag of the day fell for Masters Championship points leader Scott Kusy's damaged Troon Golf/R-Sport Mazda. "John Mefford and I were racing pretty hard and as he pulled back in line behind me his front wing cut one of my tires," Kusy stated, "by turn three I was riding on the rim. It's just one of those unfortunate racing deals."

With the 45 minute time limit fast approaching, cleanup from the Kusy incident would lead to a wild two lap shootout to the checkered flag between Justin Pruskowski and McDowell. "Coming up to the white flag Pruskowski had a five or six car length lead and I knew I had push hard to catch him, he took a defensive line through the corkscrew and I was able to pull alongside through turn nine," McDowell said. "I was about half a car length ahead coming into ten but neither one of us was willing to lift and we made contact. We went into the gravel and I kept my foot down, did a complete 360, but by the time I got back onto the track a whole swarm of cars had gone past."

Pruskowski's comments echoed those of McDowell on his wild ride to the finish line in his Quantum Autosports Mazda. "When McDowell pulled alongside I was just praying that nothing would happen, but unfortunately we touched," Pruskowski commented. "All I could see was dust and dirt, but I was determined to make it to the finish, kept my foot in it, and when all the dust cleared I was pointed towards the last corner."

With the victory, Smith narrows Cosmo's points lead down to seventeen points as the Star Mazda Series North American Championship heads to Road Atlanta for the season finale as part of the Petit LeMans weekend on October 11. The Masters Championship is still wide open as Kusy holds on to a slight lead over Joe Pruskowski and Doug Peterson, who missed this round of the championship as he was competing in the SCCA Runoffs at Mid Ohio, where he finished second behind Jamie Bach.

In Western Series competition, Smith is crowned the series champion followed by Mike Anderson and Matt Kurdock, with Kurdock claiming Rookie-of-the-Year honors, while Larry Couture captured the Western Series Masters Championship.

PIRRO AND BIELA WIN MONTEREY AMERICAN LE MANS SERIES EVENT
MONTEREY, Calif. (September 22, 2002) - Emanuele Pirro and Frank Biela led every lap en route to victory in the American Le Mans Series Monterey Sports Car Championships event Sunday at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.  Pirro, from Italy, battled fellow Audi R8 driver Tom Kristensen during the first half of the race, but Germany's Biela had clear sailing after taking over the car for his stint. The second Audi fell out of contention due to a broken suspension piece shortly after Kristensen yielded the car to co-driver Rinaldo Capello.

The Pirro/Biela Audi Sport North America car finished 25.799 seconds ahead of the Audi R8 of Johnny Herbert and Stefan Johansson in the two hour, 45-minute timed event on the 2.238-mile circuit. JJ Lehto and Max Angelelli finished third, one lap back, in a Cadillac Northstar LMP 02.

"It was a perfect race for me," said Pirro, who teamed with Biela to win last year's ALMS event at the track as well. "I thank God the setup (on the car) did not go away. I was confident of being in control of the situation, and I was not worried."

"For the last 30 minutes I was worried about everything, but finally made it," said Biela. "We had a good car that was well-balanced, but in the back of my mind the bad luck we have had in past races this year was there, so I was needing better luck."

Claudia Huertgen of Germany teamed with Steve Knight of Castle Rock, Col., and Chad Block of York, Penn., to win the LMP 675 class for smaller Prototypes.  Driving a Lola EX257-MG, they beat another Lola driven by James Weaver and Butch Leitzinger by 32 seconds.

The win was the first this season for the KnightHawk team, which won two events in the LMP 675 class last year. "This is better than apple pie at mom's place," said Knight, co-owner of the team. "We've worked so hard with this MG Lola and now we have a win with it."

Tomas Enge of the Czech Republic and Peter Kox of The Netherlands won the GTS class in the Prodrive Ferrari 550 Maranello, stopping the seven-race winning streak this season by the factory Corvette team. The Ferrari was clearly the fastest car throughout the race, only losing the lead during pit stop exchanges.

Terry Borcheller and Franz Konrad finished second in a Saleen S7R, while the Corvette of Kelly Collins and Andy Pilgrim was third in class despite running out of fuel with moments remaining in the race.  GTS class leader Ron Fellows, who had to start last in the field in his Corvette after his team elected to change tires after qualifying, collided with the Prototype driven by Angelelli and spun off the track. The exhaust system of the car suffered damage in the accident and caused the bodywork to catch fire after the car had been serviced and Johnny O'Connell had replaced Fellows at the wheel. O'Connell stopped the car in Turn 8 and bailed out unharmed before helping safety workers to extinguish the fire.

Sascha Maassen and Lucas Luhr, both of Germany, won the GT class in the Alex Job Racing Porsche 911 GT3 RS. It was the fifth win of the season for the pair. They inherited the lead from the Job team car co-driven by Timo Bernhard and Jorg Bergmeister when the gear shift broke while Bernhard was leading the class.

The next race for the American Le Mans Series will be the Cadillac American Le Mans Challenge, part of Grand Prix Americas in Downtown Miami on Oct. 4. The season will end with Audi presents Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta on Oct. 12.
