From the Racer's Group: The team continues to work through some of the things that come with setting up a new car. The braking, steering and Michelins are working well. There is a high speed push going into turn one that is being worked on.

Kevin Buckler (#66-GT Porsche 911 GT3 RS) "We're continuing to make a lot of changes to the new car. We're trying new things and are working toward the next session. We're running one second off last year and hope to get there next time out."

B.J. Zacharias (#66-GT Porsche 911 GT3 RS) "It feels like the speed is there, but there is a lack of grip. I'm confident we'll get there. The track has changed since yesterday and we need to make those adjustments."

Car #37-P675 MG Lola EX257 will not be taking the track for practice due to an alternator problem.

Car #45-GTS Dodge Viper GTS-R will also not make an appearance in practice, they are waiting for a part to arrive at the track.

At 11:19, car #31-GT Porsche 911 GT3 RS is taking a hardship lap.

At 11:53, Bret Arsenault (#13-P675 Lola B2K40/Millington) reported dragging something from the rear center of the car, possibly the air jack, returns to the pits. The car leaves without any adjustments - no apparent problem.

At 11:59, Domenico Schiattarella (#0-GTS Ferrari 550 Maranello) into the gravel at turn 11 and stopped.

Saturday June 29, 2002

It was a good news, bad news scenario for the Racer's Group and owner/driver Kevin Buckler (#66-GT Porsche 911 GT3 RS) at the 24 hours of Le Mans two weeks ago. The good news was winning the GT class in the famed twice-around-the-clock event. The bad news is multiple team equipment crates that were delayed by European customs for the return trip to the States, which was partly due to that same class victory.

Kevin Buckler "We were thrilled to win Le Mans. We're still elated and exhausted. When we were shipping our equipment crates back, we had three new things that were not listed on the German carnet (customs declaration). The first was t-shirts. The second thing was a large camera lens that belonged to a friend of mine. My Guys stuck it in a crate so he wouldn't have to carry it himself. And the third thing, believe it or not, was our Le Mans trophy! There were six airline container crates and four smaller ones. They should arrive in Chicago (next) Tuesday (for Road America). We're pretty well equipped this weekend, but we can't run two cars. There are nine sets of wheels in one of those crates, plus all kinds of tools, radio equipment, spare fuel rig, spare bodywork, and fabrication pieces." Note: The team was forced to withdraw their #67-GT entry.

At 3:15, the air temperature is 87 degrees and the track temperature is 115 degrees, according to Michelin tire engineers.

Saturday June 29, 2002

Top three in class:
#1-P900 Frank Biela 1:14.169, #50-P900 David Brabham 1:14.841, #51-P900 Bryan Herta 1:15.084
#37-P675 Jon Field 1:16.559, #56-P675 Jeff Bucknum 1:22.161, #13-P675 Ben Devlin 1:23.529

Domenico Schiattarella (#0-GTS Ferrari 550 Maranello) "We're very happy today. We stay close to the Corvette and that was our objective. Even though we had to work on braking, we feel that we'll do very well tomorrow."

Johnny Mowlem (#31-GT Porsche 911 GT3 RS) "We are very happy with the time, but we need to get the tires right. This is our first time on Yokohamas. The left rear is a key tire for us and the biggest problem is to brake late, but not too late."

Timo Bernhard (#22-GT Porsche 911 GT3 RS) "We had trouble this morning with the wheel that came off in the second practice session. (But for qualifying) there was lots of traffic on the last two laps. I was in second place coming into the pits, which was disappointing, then when I got out of the car I found myself third. This is my first time at this track."

Andy Pilgrim (#4-GTS Corvette C5-R) "It just doesn't get any closer. I'm one tenth behind Ron, then the Olive Garden (#0-GTS Ferrari 550 Maranello) is five tenths behind me. And not forgetting the Saleen (#26-GTS Saleen S7R), they are right on us too. I think they have yet to roll up their sleeves this weekend, but we'll see. I think the race this weekend is going to be a wild one for the GTS fans! I doubt (the field could be any closer). Just look at the times. I think this close competition really aids the series by making it stronger when the competition is close."

Ben Devlin (#13-P675 Lola B2K40/Millington) "We had problems earlier in the week, but the car is developing better during qualifying. The track was slippery (before today) but is much grippier now."

Bryan Herta (#51-P900 Panoz LMP01) "A driver's never happy unless they're on the pole. (Normally) for the race, we would be sitting back waiting for mistakes. But with the Audi's mechanical advantage, we will have to try and force mistakes on them. Driving the LMP car, I've been relearning the lines versus the Champ (CART) car."

Sascha Maassen (#23-GT Porsche 911 GT3 RS) "Two laps was not the qualifying plan. I did a mistake, but it was a good one." (about being slower than last year) "We have the same engine size, but last year we tried to beat the BMWs, but we were not taking that risk this year." (would you rather run against the BMW) "I would rather win against the BMWs. We have good Porsches here and good competition, probably all the cars are (close to) the same."

Frank Biela (#1-P900 Audi R-8) "We had a great weekend at Le Mans. It was a great race two weeks ago, but that's history. We are here to win the race. We found a good setup, the car ran well, and felt good on full tanks this morning. This is the same car we ran at the Le Mans race, but with different settings. The Panoz are doing the same qualifying times we had last year, we have to concentrate on improving the car. The engineers will listen to us, and we have found good solutions." (about the heat) "The heat is always a problem, however the tires are quite good. I don't expect any problems tomorrow."

Ron Fellows (#3-GTS Corvette C5-R) "We're on a roll. The Corvette team is a team that hasn't functioned any better than it is now. This is only our second race with the new cars. We're eight tenths faster than we were last year with the old cars. The progress was with the chassis." (about the Ferraris building a challenge sooner or later) "Unfortunately, yes. We got a good sign how good the 550's could be (at Le Mans). Its only a matter of time before the Rafenelli will end up as quick. Our team has built fast durable cars, and has fast pit stops."

Saturday June 29, 2002

Jon Field (#37-P675 MG Lola EX257) "We busted a startenator (combo starter and alternator) yesterday. The crew was able to rebuild it back at the shop (in Dublin Ohio) last night, but we have ordered a new one from Lola in England. We called over and we have a guy flying back over with it tomorrow morning. Its going to be used as a backup." (about the qualifying run) "I was losing grip the front of the car and couldn't go any faster. We tested here a month ago. I'm driving with my son Clint this weekend, he hasn't had many laps in this car yet. We have a good driver lineup and hope it's a fun race. We're going to have a dogfight with the 900's. This track is all about handling in traffic. We'll push as hard as we can, and keep it safe."

Jeff Bucknum (#56-P675 Pilbeam MP84/Nissan) "We're really pleased with second today. We've had a lot of motor problems in the first two race and those are solved. We're happy to be running at the top of the class with the Lola. If a couple of things happen tomorrow, we think we have a good shot at winning."

David Brabham (#50-P900 Panoz LMP01) "Traffic, traffic, traffic. I had (only) two clean laps. One of those I had a mistake on, I climbed the curb going into one and killed (the lap). We were aiming for a better time. But it's great to have both our cars up front in the grid. This is the best standing for our team this year on the grid."

Kevin Buckler (#66-GT Porsche 911 GT3 RS) "The car felt ok, but not one hundred percent. We are where we were last year at this track, but we expected to be a little quicker this time. We're a little off, but we're going to continue to make adjustments and keep working."

At 8:06, Shane Lewis (#45-GTS Dodge Viper GTS-R) into the gravel and stopped at turn 11, the team reports the throttle stuck going into the turn. Damage seems to be limited to excess gravel collection.
At 8:06, black flag all (to retrieve the #45 call).

At 8:12, green flag.
At 8:16, Dennis Spencer (#62-P675 Lola B2K/42/Mazda) stopped on the side of the course between turns 11 and 12. The crew reports the engine just stopped.

At 8:27, John Graham (#18-P900 Panoz LMP07/Mugen) and Tom Weickardt (#44-GTS Dodge Viper GTS-R) both off course and stopped at turn 10. Weickardt reports his car had a steering issue which forced him and the #18-P900 off the track together. The car seems to have sustained no significant damage. Weickardt came over and apologized to Graham afterwards in the pits.

John Graham (#18-P900 Panoz LMP07/Mugen) "When the Viper came in I had no where to go and went straight off. We don't see any damage, just a lot of gravel at the front of the car."

To further honor the international flavor of the American Le Mans Series, a new procedure is being instituted in pre-race ceremonies for this event.

Prior to the playing of the American national anthem, portions will be played of the national anthems of all countries represented by drivers in the starting field for the event. In addition, a flag of each nation will be displayed at the head of the starting grid, with the flag to be unfurled while that country's anthem portion is being played. The procedure is similar to what is done prior to the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Including the United States, there are 10 countries represented by drivers in the starting field. Others are Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, England, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Venezuela.

As is always the case at Mid-Ohio, the field will receive the green flag to start the race from the remote starter's stand at Turn 5. The pace car will enter pit road at the end of the second pace lap and the front row will pace the field to Turn 5. Timing and scoring for the race will commence at the start/finish line on the front straight when the lead car passes the control line at the end of the second pace lap.

Pit road speed limit is 60 kph for the length of pit road starting at the double pylon markers prior to the first working pit and ending at the double pylon markers just past the last working pit.

Next session: Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio Race at 2:00 pm.

Shane Lewis (#45-GTS Dodge Viper GTS-R) "I was standing by waiting to go back into the car for the finish when the differential exploded on Kevin (Allen). After the weekend we have had we were in a great position for a podium finish behind the Vettes. We need to catch a break. I wouldn't buy lottery tickets or go to Vegas with me for the next few days."

Randy Pobst (#31-GT Porsche 911 GT3 RS) "We had a great race going between Lucas (Luhr) and myself. Lucas just drove into me. Why he did that I don't know." (in response Lucas' comment that Randy hit him) "Look at my right rear."

At 4:34, Tom Weickardt (#44-GTS Dodge Viper GTS-R) is back on track after replacing bolts.
At 4:34, Didier de Radigues (#18-P900 Panoz LMP07/Mugen) is back on track after replacing the battery.

Bryan Willman (#56-P675 Pilbeam MP84/Nissan) "My stint was good, we now have reliable and solid power. The car has a great gear stack, except for first, and is very nimble in traffic. I'm getting several seconds faster and I've never raced here before. The car has first rate balance and the tries felt good."

At 4:38, Joe Blacker (#77-P675 Pilbeam MP94/Nissan) has stopped off course in turn 4.
At 4:40, Jon Field (#37-P675 MG Lola EX257) sets a new class race record with a lap of 1:17.208.

Chris McMurry (#56-P675 Pilbeam MP84/Nissan) "The car is excellent. It took six laps for the tires to come in and had a push at the start, but it's running the best it has all weekend, even though the track got slick and we had some four wheel drive."

At 4:48, Domenico Schiattarella (#0-GTS Ferrari 550 Maranello) has stopped just past pit exit, under the bridge going into turn 1, on the grass in a safe position. The driver is out of the car, reports the transmission has failed.

At 4:50, Tom Kristensen (#2-P900 Audi R-8) takes the white flag - one lap to go, with a six second lead.
At 4:52, Tom Kristensen (#2-P900 Audi R-8) starts to run out of fuel going down the hill after turn 11, and teammate Emanuele Pirro (#1-P900 Audi R-8) passes him, winning the race.

The #2 continued all the way around to the S/F line, taking second place barely as Jan Magnussen (#50-P900 Panoz LMP01) comes by 18 seconds later on the driver's left. Unofficially, for the first time in ALMS history, a P900 car has gone 2 hours and 45 minutes with only one stop.

Unofficial top three in class:
#1-P900 Emanuele Pirro (111 laps), #2-P900 Tom Kristensen (111 laps), #50-P900 Jan Magnussen (111 laps)
#3-GTS Johnny O'Connell (106 laps), #4-GTS Kelly Collins (105 laps), #44-GTS Marc Bunting (88 laps)
#66-GT BJ Zacharias (101 laps), #22-GT Jorg Bergmeister (101 laps), #79-GT J. Jackson (laps)
#56-P675 Jeff Bucknum (100 laps), #13-P675 Ben Devlin (99 laps), #11-P675 John Fergus (99 laps)

First time winners: Kevin Buckler and B.J. Zacharias (#66-GT Porsche 911 GT3 RS); Chris McMurry,Jeff Bucknum and Bryan Willman (56-P675 Pilbeam MP84/Nissan).

For Emanuele Pirro and Frank Biela (#1-P900 Audi R-8), this was their seventh ALMS win. Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell (#3-GTS Corvette C5-R) both collect their ninth ALMS victory, and a clean sweep for the 2002 season so far.

Mike Fitzgerald (#79-GT Porsche 911 GT3 RS) (about his problem with heat exhaustion) "Running the touring race earlier really took its toll. I wish I could have held out as well as the Pirelli (tires) did, but I couldn't. I tried to keep ahead of Lucas (Luhr) but just couldn't. I'm just glad we could hang on to our position."

Sascha Maassen (#23-GT Porsche 911 GT3 RS) "My stint was awful. The windshield was covered with oil and I couldn't see brake lights of cars in front of me. I had to look out the side to see the turn in points and apex. Otherwise, the heat was normal."

Post Race Quotes:

Domenico Schiattarella (#0-GTS Ferrari 550 Maranello) (about parking the car at the end) "Yeah, we lost the gearbox. Its very frustrating, it was a lot of time in the pits, but we learned a lot."

Jorg Bergmeister (#22-GT Porsche 911 GT3 RS) "It was a good day and I'm happy, especially since we lost a lot of positions on the first yellow when we came late into the pits. It was very hot and I had very high water temperatures in the car and I was losing power late in the race."

Timo Bernhard (#22-GT Porsche 911 GT3 RS) "The car was great when I drove. If not for the water temp problem, I think I could have won today."

Corrected quote: Chris McMurry (#56-P675 Pilbeam MP84/Nissan) "The car is excellent. It took six laps for the tires to come in and had a push at the start, but it's running the best it has all weekend, even though the track got slick and we had some four wheel drift."

Emanuele Pirro (#1-P900 Audi R-8) "This was a tactical race. We had a faster car, and Frank (Biela) was fastest. I got the car under yellow, then managed to pull away. Under the yellow, I came in for fuel, and I thought Tom (Kristensen - #2-Audi) would follow me. If he would have come in and had a quicker stop, he would have beat me (to the finish). They (the #2 team) decided to gamble and stay out. If the pacecar was out a few more laps they could have won. I lost momentum in traffic and my tires got dirty." (about passing Magnussen in traffic) "They were giving me a hard time, they're strong but don't have the pace we have. I tried to keep them behind, sometimes putting two wheels in the grass. I passed them on the restart, but the last 4 or 5 laps I lost momentum. I was looking at my watch. They didn't tell me that Tom (Kristensen) was on reserve. I saw him slow down. He was lucky, but also, unlucky. We tried hard because the crew was unhappy this morning after the World Cup."

Frank Biela (#1-P900 Audi R-8) "The car felt very good today as it did on Friday and Saturday. I felt comfortable and confident. It was possible to pull away, but I could not pass David Brabham. We had a gap of about 10 seconds to do our service, the strategy was right. The pit crew did a perfect job."

Bryan Willman (#56-P675 Pilbeam MP84/Nissan) "When the MG car left (#37) we got optimistic. This was a race where we didn't make any mistakes. We didn't hit a wall, tire barrier or anything, and it worked out for us." (this was his first win, anywhere) "In 130 races, this is my first win. It's a big day for me and I couldn't have a better group to do it with. I finished something like 127 of 130 races and that's why I thought endurance racing would be a good move for me. You just go as fast as you can and hope that you win, and that's what we did."

Jeff Bucknum (#56-P675 Pilbeam MP84/Nissan) "This was a very good race weekend. We didn't focus on what anybody else was doing, we didn't try to catch anybody else. We just ran our pace and it worked out for us." (getting back in at the end) "The car was running really well, and with us a lap up, the guys were telling me slow down, I was trying but it was hard to do withthe way the car was running."

Ron Fellows (#3-GTS Corvette C5-R) "Early on it was a heck of a battle when we were all bottled up. The Panoz was slippin' and slidin'. I was patient, saving the left front tire, and it worked out at the end of the stint. So far so good for 2002."

Johnny O'Connell (#3-GTS Corvette C5-R) "Ron Fellows did an amazing job at Sears Point. The heat here was brutal in the car, but I ran out of water. Break out the violins. I was patient, but there was bad luck for the 4 car."

Tom Weickardt (#44-GTS Dodge Viper GTS-R) "This is great, we got the podium. Our parts lasted longer than their parts! We were closer to the Corvettes than ever and was Marc (Bunting) that made that happen."

Marc Bunting (#44-GTS Dodge Viper GTS-R) "This is our first podium in American Le Mans and we're very happy. The heat was rough today but we made it and here we are."

Johnny Herbert (#38-P900 Audi R-8) (about the incident with the #42 car) "We had a problem with a back marker. It looked as if he spun then went into the side of me, and kicked me off into the gravel. He put us out of the race. It's been unfortunate but that's a big part of it (racing). The car before the incident was in second and cruising along great. We were closing the gap. We double stinted on our tires to keep the lead after our pit stop. We were about ready to pounce on the #1 car for the lead, but didn't get that far with getting knocked off. With that happening, we're just going to try and get some points. This car is just incredibly strong. After the repairs, you would never have known that the car was damaged. It drive just like it was before the shunt. It's a very tough car. Before the race we always setup our spare parts to match the car currently, so the drive will be back up to pace after getting back on course."

Jan Magnussen (#50-P900 Panoz LMP01) "The car is handling very well and is competitive. We don't plan to change anything before the next race. The left front dive plane on the car was damaged near the end of the race, which had a small effect on handling, but not enough to change the result of the race." (about competing against Team Audi) "I hope the Audis stay in competition next year."

Kevin Buckler (#66-GT Porsche 911 GT3 RS) (after all their success this year) "I'm not sure yet, we're still tired from Le Mans. I wouldn't want to say we expected this today (the win), but BJ (Zacharias) and I both felt good about everything, and the car. We didn't have a pole sitting car at Sears Point, but we had a good racecar. We've done that all year. Then we go into this race and everybody's driving the poop out of their cars. We're just cruising along, and all of a sudden the car gets better and better. I'd like to win one of these things easy, there was one minute at Le Mans and two seconds here (margin of victory). " (about passing the Job cars for the lead) "We got more comfortable. We had a little problem that became a big problem. One of the 675s continued to leak and we had really bad oil on our windshield. It was dangerous. Everyone had to use their best judgment on turn ins. I hounded those guys (the Job cars), that's kind of the way I do it. I start the race and don't go out swinging the first five or six laps. Then I settled in and it got going and going. "

B.J. Zacharias (#66-GT Porsche 911 GT3 RS) (how the race came together after the incident with the #23 and #31 cars) "Definitely luck played a big part today. Kevin called out on the radio to me saying, hang in there, keep your foot down, drive smooth and with a level head, and things will happen. Once again, that's Mid-Ohio."
